Accessibility statement
This page covers jcmwindowcleaning.co.uk and all its pages.
What this site aims for
This site follows the world rules for websites that everyone can use. They are called WCAG 2.2. Each page meets the main level. It goes up to the top level wherever it can. What we check says what this means for you.
No one gives out a pass mark for this. Machine checks miss most problems. So we also check each page by hand. If you find a problem, please tell us.
How we check it
We check each page by machine and by hand, in a web browser. We check that:
- text is easy to read on its background, in the normal colours and the Reading options colours
- everything works with just a keyboard. You can always see where you are, and you never get stuck
- pages fit a small phone screen, with no need to scroll from side to side
- text can be made twice as big, and you still never scroll from side to side
- buttons and links are big enough to press easily
- every link says clearly where it goes
- pages still make sense with extra features turned off in the browser
Reading options
Each page has a Reading options button. It is at the top of most pages. On this page, the Easy Read page and the review page, it is at the bottom. It lets you change the colour of the page. You can make it lighter or darker.
You can also pick one of eight colours, such as grey. You can change the colour of the text. You can make the text up to twice its size.
One setting adds more space between letters, words, lines and blocks of text. Another stops all the moving pictures on the page. You do not need to change the settings on your phone or computer.
We check many of these settings on each page. This makes sure the text stays easy to read. This device remembers your choice as you move between pages.
There is also an Easy Read version of the main page, with pictures.
If you use Safari
In Safari, pressing Tab may skip the links. This is a Safari setting. It affects all websites. This site shows a message when it happens.
To fix it:
- Open Safari, then Settings.
- Choose Advanced.
- Tick “Press Tab to highlight each item on a web page”.
Or hold Option and press Tab.
Known issues
These are the things that are not right yet. We list them, because a page that says it is perfect is not worth reading.
- Sometimes you cannot drag the line on the before and after pictures. This happens if your browser has extra features turned off. You still see both halves, side by side. Each half is also told in words for screen readers.
- Some Reading options need a browser feature called JavaScript. If it is turned off, the sliders do not work. The colour buttons, the spacing setting and Stop the moving pictures still do. But your choice is not kept from page to page. Your browser’s own zoom still makes the text bigger.
- Reading options may not work in an old browser. This is when your browser is out of date and has extra features turned off. Then the panel hides itself. It will not show up and then do nothing.
- The pictures are drawings, not photos. Each one is told in words. If the words are not clear enough, tell us. We will write them again.
- We do not cover other companies' websites here. Links to Facebook, Instagram, Google and WhatsApp take you to sites we do not run.
- Some dust in the solar panel drawings is faint. On the solar panel page, we drew the dust pale so it looks real. You can still tell the dirty half from the clean half. If you disagree, tell us.
What we check
This is what the top level of the rules means on this site. We check all pages for each of these.
- Text and background colours are easy to read. This is true in the normal colours and the Reading options colours.
- Colour is never the only way something is shown. Links in sentences have a line under them too. We also check the colours as colour-blind people see them.
- You can make text twice as big, or space it out more. Nothing gets cut off. You never have to scroll from side to side.
- There are no pictures of words. The only words in a picture are on the van, in its photo.
- Everything works with just a keyboard, even the before and after slider. Use the arrow keys to move it.
- You can always see which item you are on, and nothing covers it. Links in sentences light up. They do not get a ring round them.
- Buttons are big and easy to press. Links in sentences can be smaller.
- You can use a mouse, a touch screen and a keyboard, even at the same time.
- Each part of a page starts with its own heading. A screen reader can list them, like a table of contents.
- Each page but the home page shows where you are on the site.
- Every link says where it goes. Links with the same words always go to the same place.
- Trade words are explained in Words used in a particular way. The first time a trade word is used, it links to what it means.
- Short forms, like BSL, are written out in full the first time on a page.
- The words are written to be easy to read. There is also an Easy Read version.
- Nothing is timed. Nothing flashes. Nothing pops up: no cookie banner, no chat window.
- Nothing changes until you ask. The colours change only when you pick one.
- Moving pictures stop if you turn off movement on your device. The Reading options panel can stop them too.
- The two boxes to fill in on the main page tell you what to type, with an example. If something is missing, they say what. Then they take you to it.
- Nothing is sent from this site. The message builder opens your own WhatsApp, email or texts. So you can check the message first.
Some rules are about things this site does not have. These are videos with sound, live shows and logins.
Telling us something is wrong
If any part of this site is hard to use, tell us. Tell us too if you need something in a different way. That could be bigger print, a phone call, or a photo told in words. Say which page and what happened:
- WhatsApp 07421 205196 on WhatsApp
- Phone 07421 205196 by phone
- Email info@jcmwindowcleaning.co.uk about this site
We aim to reply within two working days. We aim to fix it, or explain why not, within ten. If our reply does not sort it out, you can go to the Equality Advisory and Support Service. They take complaints about accessibility in the UK.
The legal position
A small business in Dover runs this site. The Equality Act 2010 covers every business, however small. It says we must make reasonable adjustments for disabled customers. We use the rules above as our standard for doing that.
Words used in a particular way
Trade words used on this site, in plain English.
- Hot pure water
- Water with the minerals taken out, then heated. It dries without leaving spots, so the glass needs no drying off.
- Water-fed pole
- A brush on a long pole that carries the water up to the window. It means the work is done from the ground, not off a ladder.
- Fascia
- The board along the edge of the roof. The gutter is fixed to it.
- Soffit
- The board tucked under that roof edge, facing down at you.
- Sill
- The ledge underneath a window.
- Cladding
- Boards or panels fixed over the outside wall.
- Spot-free
- Dries with no marks left behind, because there is nothing in the water to dry on.
- Chalkiness
- The dull, powdery surface old white plastic gets. It is the plastic itself breaking down in the sun, not dirt.
- Easy Read
- A version written in short sentences with pictures, for people who find long text hard.
- Screen reader
- A program that reads a page out loud. It can also send it to a braille display.
